Chapter 12

Andrew Marshall hung up the phone on his desk much more gently than he wanted to. The last bank that he’d approached for financing another animal shelter property purchase, had declined. It seemed that non-profit organizations were too much of a risk for banks to bother with.

“Another no?” Russ asked, leaning back in his chair and staring at the ceiling.

“Yeah,” Drew rasped, dropping his head into his hands with a heavy sigh.

“What are you going to do?” Russ asked.

“I have to hope that Jess gets the account for the assisted living facility, and that once she does, the owner has a heart of gold and a bunch of warm fuzzies for animals,” Drew shook his head.

“That’s kind of a long shot on both counts, isn’t it?” Russ’s reply was practical.

“I hope not,” Drew’s tone was less than optimistic.

“I’ve been working social media as much as I can, and so far, I’ve only managed to place a couple of the cats,” Russ grimaced.

“See if you can get some celebrities on board. People find that kind of thing motivating sometimes. Maybe it’s time to approach the media too,” Drew suggested.

“Let’s see what Jessy does first,” Russ replied, after some thought. “Once we open that can of worms, we can’t turn back, and I can see the situation getting ugly if we make the big bad developer look bad for kicking out puppies and kittens during the holidays,” he pointed out reasonably.

“Yeah, makes sense,” Drew agreed. “Her presentation to Benkman is today, so we’ll know soon enough, I guess.”

Russ rose to go.

“Just let me know. Hey, O’Malley’s has Rueben sandwiches and stouts for half price tonight, wanna come drown your sorrows?” he asked, hesitating at the door.

“Maybe. We’ll see what kind of news I get from Jess. If she gets the account, the first round is on me,” Drew smiled wanly.

“Free beer? Count me in,” Russ smiled, still looking troubled, and shut the door quietly behind him on his way out.
